Strength Training Program Design

This course gives you the opportunity to become a certified Strength Training Specialist (STS) while providing you with all the necessary knowledge and expertise needed to design and implement comprehensive, effective and individualized strength and conditioning programs for the healthy population as well as a variety of patients. Many advanced programming techniques will be discussed including periodization analysis and strategies, and exercise variable manipulation such as proper sets, reps and loads making this a challenging and informative course even for the highly experienced individual. This exceptional course will teach you the science behind the programming and offer you the distinction of being recognized as a certified Strength Training Specialist (STS) with the knowledge to design creative and effective strength training routines. The course will conclude with patient case studies involving student problem solving, a written exam and a group discussion.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the attendees will be able to:

  • Design customized strength training programs for both the injured and healthy population
  • Gather the necessary information from patients utilizing patient interview and fitness testing
  • Understand how to monitor and measure strength training intensity
  • Understand oxygen consumption, target and training heart rate and perceived exertion
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of overtraining
  • Design individual training programs and periodization programs
  • Identify and understand different types of resistance training
  • Explain healthy eating habits required to maximize strength training

COURSE OUTLINE

The Strength Training Program Design course will provide you with the Strength Training Specialist (STS) certification. This course is 6 hours long and requires 6 hours of homestudy. The course times and locations are released 180 days before the day of the course and can be found on the Schedule section of this site. Most locations are prominent hotels near major airports for your convenience. In addition, we will send you written confirmation of the course time and location with your homestudy materials 21 days before the date of the course. All IWA class sizes are limited and fill quickly.

On-site - The course will last for 6 hours and will consist of lecture, lab, student participation in problem solving and a written exam on the theories presented. You will be required to arrive 15 minutes early to register and bring your textbook with you. This information will be included in your confirmation letter sent to you 21 days before the course.

Homestudy - You will be sent a training manual with your confirmation letter 21 days before the course. You will be required to spend 6 hours reading this information. This is done so that you have a base knowledge before arriving at the on-site clinic. At the clinic we will review program design theories presented as well as offer information to satisfy all other stated objectives.

Total time required: 6 hours on-site / 6 hours homestudy

Massage Therapists: The IWA is an NCBTMB approved provider (provider #301388-00) and this course meets the NCBTMB criteria for 12 Continuing Education Hours. Please note that the IWA course content can only be used as self care by massage therapists and that teaching specific exercises to your client is beyond the scope of practice per the NCBTMB Standards of Practice.
