The International Weightlifting Association - IWA

Continuing Education for Health Care Professionals

The IWA was established in 1989 by a group of gifted Physical Therapists. Their mission was to establish proper weightlifting techniques for both the healthy and injured populations. They saw a need to create industry standards which could then be continually approved upon and applied to their profession.

The first published textbook of the IWA, A Guide to Proper Weightlifting Techniques, quickly became recognized as the preferred source for weightlifting education by not only Physical Therapists but many other Health Care Professionals. Nationwide continuing education seminars with international correspondence courses were, and continue to be, offered to more than 4,000 Physical Therapists annually.

Today, the IWA course offerings consist of an expanded range of fitness related topics which include Weight Training for Rehab, Function and Fitness, Strength Training Program Design, Strength Training for Seniors, Yoga, Pilates, Therapy Ball Training and Functional Exercise Training. All IWA courses offer the most comprehensive self care and rehabilitative fitness solutions available.

Once only available to Physical Therapists, the IWA Educational Committee now includes Occupational Therapists, Massage Therapists and Athletic Trainers. This has allowed us to add new course content and include these professions among those eligible to attend IWA continuing education courses.

It is our goal to help you explore the scientific principles and theories of physical fitness, inspire you to venture beyond the traditional boundaries of your profession and provide you with knowledge which may otherwise not be available to you. Whether you are working with rehab patients in the clinic or training clients in the gym, our courses will offer you the expertise and credibility to excel as a therapist or trainer.
